Synopsis
How do you solve complex problems affecting the world’s children?
The world’s most complex socio-economic problems affecting children - from migration, the spread of epidemics, to the needs of the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) - cannot be tackled by a single organization in the public sector alone. To advance UNICEF’s mission, collaborative data-driven solutions are critical, especially with the private sector. Much of this digital data sits with corporations in the form of web clicks, ‘like’ buttons, cell phone data, satellite data, etc. However, accessing these troves of privately-held data is not easy.
The Product
The Data Collaboratives initiative led by UNICEF and GovLab at NYU connects complex problems with data and expertise from different sectors - particularly companies and academia -  to create public value for children. Access to big data and data science expertise can help evaluate impact, fill data gaps, improve forecasting, and empower decision-makers to tailor their interventions closer to real time.
Design and Concept
The approach was to build a visual language that weaved together different partnerships under the Data Collaboratives initiative but also highlighted each focus area.
Data pie charts, plotting graphs, research, and scientific findings were used as inspiration to create bold and abstract visuals. While some initiatives required informational posters, some were shared with higher leadership and potential investors with additional content.

By design, the black and white color palette created a beautiful contrast between the content and the visuals, adding clarity and legibility to the communication collaterals.
